How We Started
Starting an NGO was not easy. Ms. Jaskirat had no financial backing, no powerful connections, and no significant support from the community at first. People were sceptical. From a conservative background, speaking openly about menstruation was seen as taboo, and many questioned the need for such an organization.
Jaskirat’s first challenge was convincing people that menstrual health was not something to be ashamed of. She began by organizing small community meetings, where she would gather women and girls in her area and talk openly about menstruation. The response was mixed—some were uncomfortable, others were outright hostile. Yet, there were also those who listened, who shared their stories of pain and humiliation in silence, and who quietly expressed their gratitude for the opportunity to finally talk about what had long been ignored.
She also had to deal with the resistance from men. “Why are you focusing on women’s issues?” some of them would ask. “Why waste time on something so trivial?” But Jaskirat stood her ground, fuelled by the memory of her own self, suffering from periods related health issues. She explained that menstrual health was not just a women’s issue; it was a community issue, a public health issue, and a matter of basic human rights.
It was not until Jaskirat organized a small educational session on menstrual hygiene that things began to change. She partnered with a few local health professionals, and they distributed free sanitary products to the women who attended. Some women could not believe they were receiving sanitary pads for free; they had never imagined that something so simple could make such a difference in their lives. Some cried, others smiled, and a few simply sat quietly, overwhelmed by the fact that someone cared enough to give them access to the products they had long been denied.
As the first few programs began to gain traction, Jaskirat realized that she could not do this alone. She began to reach out to other like-minded individuals and organizations. Slowly, her small idea grew into a full-fledged NGO, Sifaaz Foundation, with the mission to provide women with the education, products, and support they needed to take control of their menstrual health. Jaskirat’s tireless advocacy helped to raise awareness at the local level, and soon she was invited to speak at state level conferences and collaborate with other organisations.
It was not just about sanitary products or educational materials anymore. Sifaaz Foundation also worked to break down the deep-seated stigma around menstruation, urging society to see it not as a “dirty” secret, but as a natural process that needed understanding, compassion, and respect.
Ms. Jaskirat Kaur, Founder of the organisation was actively involved in social work from past years. She felt the need of working in roots i.e. her own city, Chandigarh where no organisation is particularly working for women's health. She is now a certified trainer in Menstrual Hygiene Management, Master Trainer in Poshan Bhi Padhai Bhi and certified trainer in POSH. Considering the situation of women, she started with a motive of building a society where women can live healthy and discrimination free lives.
Founder's Message
Dear friends and supporters,
At Sifaaz, we believe that true change begins with empowering women. As we work together to break barriers, shatter stereotypes, and create opportunities, our mission is clear: to build a world where every woman has the opportunity to thrive, lead, and contribute to society without fear or limitation.
Over the time, we have witnessed the incredible strength, resilience, and potential of women in the communities we serve. From providing access to education, healthcare, and economic resources, to fostering self-confidence and leadership skills, we have seen how empowerment transforms not only individuals, but entire communities.
However, we recognize that the journey is far from over. While we celebrate every achievement, we remain committed to amplifying women's voices, fighting for their rights, and ensuring their access to resources and opportunities. Together, we are creating a future where every girl and woman can dream without limits and achieve without barriers.
Our work is far from over, but together, with your support, we are making a tangible difference. We aim to empower women not just as patients but as active participants in their own health journeys, as advocates for change in their communities, and as leaders in the fight for gender equality in healthcare.
We are grateful to our members, volunteers, and every individual who shares our vision and contributes to our mission. Your unwavering dedication fuels our work and inspires us to keep pushing forward.
We invite you to join us in this movement for change. Every step you take—whether through advocacy, education, or simply spreading awareness—brings us closer to a world where gender equality is not just an aspiration, but a reality.
Together, we can uplift women, challenge norms, and create a lasting impact. Let us work hand in hand to build a future where every woman’s potential is realized and celebrated.
Thank you for your unwavering support.
With gratitude and hope,
Ms. Jaskirat Kaur
